Tructyre Get To Grips With Storage

New warehouse provides productivity gains for tyre distributor

Following a move to a new regional distribution warehouse largest regional truck tyre service specialists in the UK, wanted to ensure they maximised the use of the available space to meet the demands of their ever expanding business.

Scott Matthews, Senior Operations Executive at Tructyre commented “It would have been easy to just work the way we did at our old site and lose the opportunity to increase storage density and improve working efficiency. We called Locators Storage Systems and asked them to make a design proposal for our new facility.”

Locators specialise in narrow aisle storage systems with aisle widths as low as 1.6 metres. These storage systems operate in conjunction with specialist forklift trucks that lift to heights in excess of 10 metres. These types of storage systems maximise the use of both the available floor space and roof height.

David Scammell, Storage Systems Engineer for Locators remarked “We evaluated several options to ensure we could meet all the requirements for efficient storage and ease of distribution of large commercial vehicle tyres. The final design was based around a standard pallet racking system with timber decks and anti-collapse mesh to prevent tyres being pushed through the racking.”

Locators configured the racking to work with articulated forklifts fitted with clamp attachments. Protective barriers were fitted at the end of each aisle to minimise the risk of damage from forklift operation. The installation has provided Tructyre with a storage capacity of up to 5,000 tyres of different sizes.

Scott added “The installation went very smoothly and was completed on time. We are very pleased with the outcome and are already appreciating the benefits of having a well organised and efficient warehouse.”
